Dharma Wisdom
If we are poor we should not be depressed but make strenuous efforts to gain the true internal wealth of Dharma realisations, since this is the real source of happiness and peace of mind. With a contented mind we shall be happy even without wealth; but if we have a discontented mind we shall be unhappy, no matter how rich we may become. It is important to understand that happiness and unhappiness depend upon the mind. When we are faced with an unfortunate situation we should regard this a wise counsellor and use it as a means of accumulating merit. In this way even poverty can lead us to virtuous paths; but without such an attitude we shall be constantly worried about our lack of recources.

"The purpose of meditation is to make our mind calm and peaceful. If our mind is peaceful we shall be free from worries and mental discomfort, and we shall experience true happiness; but if our mind is not peaceful we shall find it very difficult to be happy, even if we are living in the very best conditions. If we train in meditation our mind will gradually become more and more peaceful, and we shall experience a purer and purer form of happiness. Eventually, we shall be happy all of the time, even in the most difficult circumstances." - Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso
